The 6th Annual Conference on Higher Education Pedagogy is focused on higher education teaching excellence and the scholarship of teaching and learning. The conference showcases the best pedagogical practice and research in higher education today. Sessions address disciplinary and interdisciplinary instructional strategies, outcomes, and research. Ultimately, the conference is an opportunity to demonstrate effective instructional practice and disseminate the latest research aimed at improving the quality of higher education.

Faculty are, on a daily basis and in very unassuming ways, demonstrating a renewed energy and focus toward the scholarship of teaching and learning. This is further evidenced by our attention to academic assessment, the integration of technology and learning, and even in the change in our teaching lexicon as we incorporate active engagement and reflective practices into instruction to encourage authentic learning. Join us as we showcase and share our collective growth, innovation, and achievement in teaching and learning.

The Pre-Conference Workshops are designed to allow participants to delve deeply into specific topics related to teaching and learning in higher education. This year's workshops will address assessing student learning, facilitating interaction within online/blended courses, effective uses of technology in the classroom, productively integrating ePortfolios into courses, and creating a learner-centered classroom.

José Bowen: Dr. Bowen will address TBA focusing on... José Bowen is Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts, and Algur H. Meadows Chair and Professor of Music, at Southern Methodist University. Bowen began his teaching career at Stanford University in 1982, first as the Director of Jazz Ensembles, and then for the Humanities Special Programs and the Afro-American Studies Program. In 1994, he became the Founding Director of the Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music (C.H.A.R.M.) at the University of Southampton, England. He returned to America in 1999 as the first holder of the endowed Caestecker Chair of Music in the new Program in the Performing Arts at Georgetown University. In 2004, Miami University named him Dean of Fine Arts and Professor of Music. Dr. Bowen has also been a pioneer in active learning and the use of technology in the classroom, including podcasts and online games, and has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, USA Today, US News and World Report, and on NPR for his book Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology out of your College Classroom will Improve Student Learning (Jossey-Bass, 2012). He is currently working on an online jazz history game. He has been honored by students and colleagues for his teaching at SMU, Miami and Georgetown and he received a Stanford Centennial Award for Undergraduate Teaching in 1990.

Melissa Peet: Dr. Peet will address TBA, an approach to.... Melissa Peet is the Director of Integrative Learning and Knowledge Management at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her research focuses on understanding the types of knowledge, curricula, and learning methods that support students in becoming effective leaders, entrepreneurs and change agents. From her research, Dr. Peet created the Integrative Knowledge Portfolio Process, a method of integrative learning that supports students in connecting, reflecting on, and synthesizing knowledge and skills from all areas of life. Dr. Peet is currently exploring the role tacit knowledge (unconscious and informal ways of knowing) plays in the development of leaders, innovators and extraordinary practitioners across several fields and disciplines. She has recently developed a methodology, Generative Knowledge Interviewing, for retrieving the tacit knowledge that exists within people — from novices to experts — and is in the process of integrating this methodology with the Integrative Knowledge Portfolio Process on campuses across the country.

The conference has grown steadily over the past five years, from 288 participants in 2009 to 834 participants in 2013 from 175 institutions, 31 states, and 30 countries, including community colleges, liberal arts colleges, medical colleges, research universities, and historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). We are anticipating 1000 participants in 2014! Come join us!
