Conference Description

 Teaching and learning English today is changing in a world that has become more diverse in its cultures and contexts. Teachers, learners, researchers, and administrators find themselves in a period of genuine conversation and dialogue among themselves. They are confronted not only by the challenges of diversity in cultures and contexts, but also by the reality of a language that is dynamic and changing. Today, we do not talk of just one English, but of Englishes.

 What are the opportunities and challenges of teaching and learning Englishes across Asian contexts? How do we view the relevance of Englishes today in a classroom of many voices? What roles do Englishes play in educational systems that accommodate a plurality of identities? This conference aims to provide a venue for a critical rethinking and discussion of these relevant concerns.

 In particular, the presentations at this conference seek to raise a more informed awareness of Englishes in Asian contexts and facilitate the negotiation of more appropriate classroom practices and research endeavors for more effective policies and pedagogies through the following topics:

Presentation Proposal Submissions

ONLINE SUBMISSIONS ONLY (beginning November 15, 2012)

For International and Local (Philippine) Submissions. All presentation proposals must be submitted online at www.asiateflphil.org. Presentation proposals must contain a 250-word abstract and a 60-word biodata, as well as other relevant information required in the presentation application form, which is found in the website.

**Only ONE proposal per person should be submitted. If more than one proposal is submitted by the same person, none will be accepted. However, one individual presentation and one joint presentation are allowed.

Travel Grants

Travel grants of US$300 are available for about 20 concurrent session presenters. This funding is available for presenters based outside of the Philippines. The deadline for submission of travel grant applications is March 30, 2013. Individuals who have received an Asia TEFL travel grant in the past are not eligible for 2013 travel grants. Send the travel grant application with the abstract, biographical data, and travel grant application form to Dr. Sung-Soo Jang at asiatefltg2013@gmail.com. The abstract should consist of 250 words. Biographical data should not exceed 60 words.

Outstanding Paper Grants

Grants of US$1,000 will be awarded to one to three (1-3) outstanding papers. The grant recipients will be invited for 40-minute special presentations at the 2013 conference, and lodging will be provided for the four-day duration of the conference. In addition, the awarded papers will be published in the Journal of Asia TEFL. The grants are awarded to authors whose papers address Asian-specific ELT issues and concerns and provide outstanding resolutions and pedagogic implications, strictly focusing on “effective innovations for the Asian English classroom.” A full-length paper (15-20 pages) should be submitted with a 100-word biographical sketch. Authors are expected to follow the style specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). The paper submitted must not have been submitted elsewhere or previously published. Your paper with biographical data should be sent to Dr. Eun Gyong (E.G.) Kim at asiateflbestpapers@gmail.com. Most Innovative Classroom Teaching Grants

Grants of US$600 will be awarded to one to three (1-3) individuals for outstanding innovation in classroom teaching. Grant applicants are required to submit a 5-7 page description of the innovation(s), which clearly focuses on the innovation’s effectiveness and creativeness for the Asian English classroom teaching context. A 60-word biographical sketch should also be submitted.

The applications of three to five applicants will be selected in the preliminary selection round. The chosen applicants must then make presentations on innovative classroom teaching at the 2013 Asia TEFL International Conference. Their presentations will be evaluated by a panel of five selection committee members, and one to three of these presenters will be selected as awardees of the Most Innovative Classroom Teaching grants. The awardees’ presentations will be posted on the NewsNet section of the Asia TEFL website.

The registration fee covers lunch, snacks, a conference kit, and access to all sessions for the duration of the three-day conference.
