FACES OF ENGLISH AT HKU, HONG KONG
As “Asia’s World City”, Hong Kong is a place where ‘faces’ from all parts of the globe come to work, study, and play together, and HKU is its most international university. It is an ideal location then for this conference which highlights the rich diversity of approaches to understanding English and the range of contexts in which it is taught, studied and used around the world. This conference will bring together academics, researchers, practitioners and research students to share their research and practical ideas on the analysis, description and teaching of English in a city with a rich cultural heritage, stunning natural scenery and a buzzing street and night life.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The conference theme is FACES OF ENGLISH: THEORY, PRACTICE AND PEDAGOGY.
You are invited to submit proposals for individual papers, colloquia, workshops, demonstration sessions and poster displays that address any topic relevant to the theme including:
Assessment Autonomy and out-of-class learning Corpus linguistics
Discourse and pragmatics ESP and EAP Language acquisition
Language and gender Language for intra- and/or intercultural communication
Language learning style and motivation Language planning and policy
Language, power and identity Language and technology
Language teaching and learning (e.g. materials development, syllabus design, teacher development)
CONFERENCE REGISTRATION FEES
• Early-bird: HKD2,000 (by 28 February 2015)
• Standard: HKD2,500 (1 March – 11 May 2015); HKD2,700 (from 12 May 2015)
• Full-time student: HKD1,000 (a copy of the student ID card is required within 3 days to complete registration)
• Post-conference Workshop: HKD250 (by 11 May 2015 - subject to availability)

ACCOMMODATION
We have selected Hotel Jen as our plenary hotel for its close proximity to HKU and good reputation. The hotel is offering our delegates a limited number of rooms at a special discount rate on a first-come- first-served basis. Please see our conference website for other accommodation options.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND CONFERENCE EVENTS
Along with the profusion of talks and presentations there are a number of social activities and cultural events where you can enjoy the many ‘faces’ of Hong Kong.
• Welcome Reception in HKU’s historic Loke Yew Hall (11 June 2015, Thursday) –relax and meet old and new friends at this cocktail-style event
• Conference Dinner at Maxim’s Palace City Hall, one of Hong Kong’s best restaurants (12 June 2015, Friday) – experience local Cantonese cuisine and socialize and network with other conference participants
• Shows by local performers – watch memorable short performances such as lion dancing, acrobatics, martial arts and traditional music during tea breaks
• Exhibitions by local artists and students (on display throughout the conference)

A selection of contributions presented at the conference will be invited for publication in an edited book volume or in a special issue of the Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics.
