内容提要:
The notion of a speech act, as developed in work by Austin, Searle, Vanderveken, and others, has the potential of relating linguistics to the study of communication and to social sciences in general. However, this promise remains unfulfilled. I will develop a new representation of communication that allows for the representation of various types of speech acts. In particular, assertions are analyzed as commitments of a speaker for the truth of a proposition. The formal modal I will propose also captures speech acts as indicators of the direction into which a conversation should develop. In particular, I will treat speech act negation (as in I don’t promise to come) and questions as such future-directed moves. I will also show how speech acts can be conjoined, disjoined, and conditionalized. The resulting model is able to capture human information exchange more adequately than earlier or competing approaches, and should be attractive for studying real conversation.
